Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Alantine.
Etymology: < German Alantine (1809 in Jrnl. der Pharm. f. Aerzte, Apotheker u. Chemischen 18 i. 76) < Alant elecampane, Inula helenium (10th cent. in Old High German, probably ultimately < classical Latin inula : see further discussion at horseheal n.) + -ine -ine suffix5, with subsequent remodelling of the ending after -in suffix1.
Chemistry. Now chiefly historical.
Any of a set of polysaccharides of the fructan group, which are found in the roots and rhizomes of various plants and used medically to test kidney function; = inulin n. at inula n. Derivatives.

1834 J. D. Morries in G. Graves Hortus Medicus 119 Inuline was discovered in the elecampane by Rose, it has also been named helmine, alantine, datinine, and dahline.
1838 T. Thomson Chem. Org. Bodies 660 Inulin has been distinguished by various names. John called it Helenin; Trommsdorf, Alantin and Menyanthin.
1891 Brit. Med. Jrnl. 17 Oct. 838/1 Marpmann..stated that helenine consisted of two bodies, alantin and alantic acid, both of which were useful in medicine.
1971 J. A. DiPalma Drill's Pharmacol. in Med. (ed. 4) lxxxiv. 1854/2 Inulin, also known as alantin or alant starch, is a polysaccaride from Compositae..obtained from various plant sources such as Dahlia tubers, Jerusalem artichoke tubers, and Inula.
2008 A. D. Sharma in J. M. Cantor Progress Food Engin. iv. 76 Inulin..was also identified by other names such as helenin, alantin..and sinisterin.
