Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French agréableté ; agreeable adj., -ty suffix1.
Etymology: Originally (in early use) < Middle French agréableté (13th cent. in Old French in sense ‘act by which one makes oneself agreeable’) < agréable agreeable adj. + -te -ty suffix1. In later use < agreeable adj. + -ty suffix1 (see -bility suffix); compare agreeableness n.
Now somewhat archaic.
The quality of being agreeable (in various senses); esp. agreeableness of disposition, pleasantness.Before the 18th cent. apparently only in Chaucer (quot. ?c1400). The word does not appear in any dictionary before Todd's edition of Johnson's Dictionary (1818).
