Etymology: < Anglo-Norman agraunter (beginning of the 13th cent. in sense ‘to grant’; also as agraanter ), apparently a variant or alteration of Old French acreanter to assure, promise, guarantee, grant (12th cent.; Middle French acreanter ): see further discussion at grant v. Perhaps compare also ogrant adj.
Obsolete. rare.
