Etymology: < Columbia poetic name for America + -ium suffix. So named in 1801 by Hatchett, who discovered it in a specimen of the ore (columbite) brought from Massachusetts.
Chemistry.
A metallic element, occurring in columbite and other minerals. Symbol Cb. Now called niobium.
