Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Agoniadin.
Etymology: < German Agoniadin ( T. Peckolt 1867, in Archiv der Pharm. 129 252) < Brazilian Portuguese agoniada , the name of the tree ( Himatanthus lancifolius) from which the substance was first obtained + -in -in suffix1. Compare Portuguese agoniadina (1867 or earlier).
Chemistry. Now rare.
A bitter compound obtained from two Amazonian forest trees, Himatanthus lancifolius and H. sucuuba (family Apocynaceae), whose bark and leaves are used in Brazilian folk medicine.Agoniadin is a glucoside of a tricyclic base; C21H26O12.

1870 Proc. Amer. Pharmaceut. Assoc. 18 278 The leaves, and especially the bark of agoniada, contain..a neutral bitter principle, which is free of nitrogen and has almost the same composition as arbutin... Peckolt proposes the name agoniadin for this body.
1875 H. Watts Dict. Chem., 2nd Supp. 30 Dilute sulphuric acid dissolves agoniadin only when warmed.
1912 T. E. Thorpe Dict. Appl. Chem. (rev. ed.) I. 56/1 The bark of Plumiera lancifolia (Muell.), used in Brazil as a remedy for intermittent fever, contains a bitter crystalline glucoside, agoniadin, identical with the plumieride of Boorsma and Merck.
1986 B. Oliver-Bever Medicinal Plants Trop. W. Afr. iv. 154 Plumeried [read plumieride], also called agoniadin, is a pseudo-indican glucoside.
