Etymology: < German Agoniadin ( T. Peckolt 1867, in Archiv der Pharm. 129 252) < Brazilian Portuguese agoniada , the name of the tree ( Himatanthus lancifolius) from which the substance was first obtained + -in -in suffix¹. Compare Portuguese agoniadina (1867 or earlier).

1875 H. Watts Dict. Chem., 2nd Supp. 30 Dilute sulphuric acid dissolves agoniadin only when warmed.

1912 T. E. Thorpe Dict. Appl. Chem. (rev. ed.) I. 56/1 The bark of Plumiera lancifolia (Muell.), used in Brazil as a remedy for intermittent fever, contains a bitter crystalline glucoside, agoniadin, identical with the plumieride of Boorsma and Merck.

1986 B. Oliver-Bever Medicinal Plants Trop. W. Afr. iv. 154 Plumeried [read plumieride], also called agoniadin, is a pseudo-indican glucoside.
