Etymology: < post-classical Latin Agnus Dei Lamb of God (Vulgate), part of the Mass beginning with the words Agnus Dei (7th cent.), consecrated wax image of the Lamb of God (mid 8th cent.) < classical Latin agnus lamb ( < the same Indo-European base as ancient Greek ἀμνός lamb) + Deī , genitive of Deus god (see deus int.). Compare the Lamb of God at lamb n.1 3a.
