Etymology: < classical Latin colostrum (also colustrum), neuter, colostra (also colustra), feminine singular, of unknown origin. Compare Middle French, French †colostre (1564), colostrum (c1585).Both feminine and neuter forms are found in classical Latin. Latin grammarians state that the neuter is the correct form; it is possible that the feminine form arose from reinterpretation of the neuter plural.

The milk secreted by a female mammal around the time of giving birth, which is a watery fluid with a high protein content, including maternal antibodies which provide passive immunity to the newborn. In early use also: †the cream or coagulated protein of ordinary milk (obsolete).
