Etymology: < classical Latin colostrātiōn-, colostrātiō fatal disease of newborn mammals, attributed to colostrum (Pliny) < colostrātus affected with disease attributed to colostrum (Pliny; < colostrum colostrum n. + -ātus -ate suffix2) + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare Middle French colostration (1563 in an apparently isolated attestation). N.E.D. (1891) gives the pronunciation as (kǫlǫ̆strēi·ʃən) /kɒləˈstreɪʃən/.
Medicine. Obsolete. rare.
Illness (esp. diarrhoea) in newborn animals or children attributed to the ingestion of colostrum; = beestings n. 2.
