Origin: Formed within English, by conversion. Etymons: quo he, quoth he.
Etymology: Probably < Scots and Irish English (northern) quo he, co he (18th cent. or earlier), variants (representing a colloquial pronunciation) of quoth he (see quoth v.), regarded as characteristic of the speech of the Scottish and Irish settlers in the region.Compare Irish English (northern) quo-he, co-he (noun), denoting people of various rural regions in the north of Ireland, implying lack of education (a1908 or earlier).
U.S. regional. Now historical.
An inhabitant of the mountainous regions of western Virginia (including present-day West Virginia), being typically of Irish, Scottish, or German extraction. Cf. tuckahoe n. 3.
