Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Italian. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Italian commodulazione; Latin commodulātiōn-, commodulātiō.
Etymology: < (i) Italian commodulazione (1499 as †commodulatio in the passage translated in quot. 1592), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin commodulātiōn-, commodulātiō symmetry (Vitruvius 3. 1) < com- com- prefix + modulāt- , past participial stem of modulārī modulate v. + -iō -ion suffix1.Compare post-classical Latin commodulari to sing (15th cent.).
Harmonious correspondence in proportion between elements, esp. in a work of art or architecture.Frequently with reference to the concept of harmonious proportion described by Vitruvius ( De Architectura 3. 1).Apparently unattested between the 17th and 20th centuries.
