Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French commixtre; Latin commixt-, commiscēre.
Etymology: Either (i) < Anglo-Norman commixtre (1467 or earlier; < com- com- prefix + mixter mixt v.), or (ii) < classical Latin commixt-, past participial stem of commiscēre (see commix v.). Compare earlier commixed adj., commix v. Compare also slightly earlier immixt v. and later mixt v., admixt v., intermixt v.
Obsolete.
transitive. = commix v. (chiefly in sense 1a).
