Etymology: < post-classical Latin colore officii (1579 or earlier: see quot. 1579; compare sub colore officii , in same sense (1305 or earlier in British sources, 1548 or earlier in continental sources)) < classical Latin colōre , ablative of color colour n.1 + officiī , genitive of officium office n., after Anglo-Norman and Law French par colur de son office under pretext of one's office (1275 or earlier).
