Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian coloratura.
Etymology: < Italian coloratura colouring (a1635; although in early use this does not occur frequently in specific musical use) < post-classical Latin coloratura (in an undated glossary) < classical Latin colōrāt- , past participial stem of colōrāre colour v. + -ūra -ure suffix1. Compare German Koloratur, †Coloratur, earliest in general sense ‘musical ornamentation’ (1571), later also more specifically ‘coloratura’ (18th cent. or earlier), †colorieren to sing with such ornamentation (1594).In sense A. 2 elliptical from uses in sense B. 2.
