Etymology: < post-classical Latin Agnoitae, plural (6th cent.) < Byzantine Greek ἀγνοηταί (occasionally also ἀγνοίται ) heretics who denied the omniscience of Christ < ancient Greek ἀγνοεῖν to be ignorant ( < ἀ- a- prefix⁶ + an ablaut variant of the stem of γιγνώσκειν to know: see know v.; compare etymological note at agnoiology n.) + -ται, plural of -της, suffix forming agent nouns.
