单词 agnean
释义

Agneann.

Brit. /aɡˈniːən/, U.S. /ˌæɡˈniən/
Origin: Apparently from a proper name, combined with an English element; modelled on a Sanskrit lexical item. Etymons: proper name Agni , -ean suffix.
Etymology: Apparently < Agn- (in Agni, the name of an ancient kingdom in Central Asia, now in China (Sanskrit Agni : see note)) + -ean suffix, after Sanskrit Agneya relating to Agni (compare quot. 1937).Sanskrit Agni probably reflects a name in a local language, probably the same as Tocharian B akeñe , perhaps literally ‘border country’. It has also been suggested that the Sanskrit name it is a reinterpretation of such a local name after agni fire, god of fire’ (see ignite v.). The town of Agni, central to the ancient kingdom, is identified with the city of Yanqi in Xinjiang, China (whose modern name, Chinese Yānqí, is written with the same characters as an Old Chinese name of Agni).
The Eastern dialect of Tocharian (an extinct Indo-European language): = Tocharian A at Tocharian n. Cf. Turfanian n.

1937 H. W. Bailey in Bull. School Oriental Stud. 8 904 Dialect A is the Agnean (Sanskrit Agneya) language... A further decisive proof that Dialect A is a language of central Asia, that is, of Agni, is furnished by the loanwords in Kuchean and Agnean. The name Agnean will be used in what follows for Dialect A.
1939 L. H. Gray Found. Lang. xi. 322 The language [sc. ‘Tokharian’] falls into two dialects, one centring in the east around Karashar, [and which] may perhaps best be termed Agnean (other designations being Tokharian A, Turfanian, and Karasharian). A considerable amount of Agnean has been made available.
1948 D. Diringer Alphabet ii. vi. 348 He [sc. Professor Bailey], therefore, suggests calling ‘Dialect A’ [of Tokharian] Agnean.
1989 J. P. Mallory In Search of Indo-Europeans ii. 56 Tocharian is divided into two major dialects. The easternmost is termed Tocharian A (or Turfanian or Karashahrian after the two major towns near which manuscripts of this dialect were recovered, or Agnean).
2005 Bull. School Oriental & Afr. Stud. 68 430 Pessāl cannot belong to Sogdian nor to Agnean, where ā appears in the ultima of dissyllabic words only after a short vowel (ä, u, i).
This is a new entry (OED Third Edition, September 2012; most recently modified version published online December 2021).
