Forms: Past tense and participle coft; also 1800s caft.
Etymology: originally found only in past participle and past tense coft , probably < Middle Dutch coft, cofte (still dialect beside later kocht ), past participle of côpen to buy and sell, deal, trade (according to the general Germanic phonetic law which excluded pt , kt , compare Old English sóhte for *sócte .) Hence, at a later date, was formed a present coff : the original present was cope v.3
