Etymology: Related to coff v. to buy; but the mode of formation is uncertain, as is also the relation of senses 1, 2; they may be distinct derivatives. Compare Dutch koop, Middle High German kouf ‘dealing, bargain, trade’; also Old High German choufo ‘dealer, merchant’.
