单词 agle
释义

aglev.

Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: ettle v.; gale v.1
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps a variant of ettle v., with simplification of a medial consonant cluster (which is frequent in the manuscript of the source text; compare forms of ettle v. with medial -ghtl-, -ghl-); alternatively, perhaps a transmission error for gale v.1 (in which case the meaning is probably ‘to cry out’; compare discussion by B. Lindström, in Notes & Queries (2000) June 166/2).Various attempts have been made to explain the word instead as showing a form of ail v., but this does not fit the wider semantic context of the passage well (compare discussion in P. Buehler Middle Eng. Genesis & Exodus (1974) 77–8). The same is true of the suggested connection with early modern Danish agle to wobble, totter, to lurch, to stagger (Danish (now regional: Jutland) agle ), a derivative < the same base as the Scandinavian nouns cited at awe n.1
Obsolete. rare.
