Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Coelenterata.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Coelenterata ( R. Leuckart Ueber die Morphologie und die Verwandtschaftsverhältnisse der wirbellosen Thiere (1848) 13) < ancient Greek κοῖλος hollow (see cœlo- comb. form1) + ἔντερον enteron n. + scientific Latin -ata (see -ate suffix2). Compare German Coelenteraten (1848 in the same source).
Zoology.
1. With plural (or occasionally singular) agreement: a phylum or group of aquatic acoelomate invertebrates comprising the members of the present-day phyla Cnidaria and (in earlier use) Ctenophora. Also with plural agreement: animals of this phylum (collectively or individually); coelenterates.The Cnidaria and Ctenophora are now known to be only superficially similar, having jelly-like bodies and stinging tentacles. The name Coelenterata has effectively been replaced by Cnidaria (see Cnidaria n.).Some earlier examples may refer to sense 2.
