a. A (padded) pouch attached to the front of a man's close-fitting hose or breeches to cover the genitals, commonly worn in the 15th and 16th cent.Codpieces in the mid 16th cent. were often conspicuously large and ornamented. The codpiece has frequently been interpreted as a symbol of masculinity or virility.Some contemporary versions of the codpiece are associated with the leather subculture: see quot. 1970.
