Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek μορϕή , -ism suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μορϕή form (see -morph comb. form) + -ism suffix.Combined with first elements ultimately of Greek origin. Early words ending in -morphism show the addition of -ism suffix to stems in -morph (in some cases after German or French models), e.g. anthropomorphism n., metamorphism n., isomorphism n. Most formations date from the second half of the 19th cent.; mathematical uses (e.g. homoeomorphism n., isomorphism n.) occur from the end of the 19th cent. onwards.
