单词 coadjutor
释义

coadjutorn.

/kəʊəˈdʒ(j)uːtə//kəʊˈadʒ(j)uːtə/
Forms: Also Middle English coadiutowre, 1500s–1600s coadiutour, coadiutor, coadjutour, 1600s coaiutor, coajutor.
Etymology: < Old French coadjuteur (in Anglo-Norman -our ), < Latin coadjūtor , -ōrem , < co- prefix + adjūtor helper, agent-noun. < adjuvāre to help. The French derivation gave the accentuation coˈadjutor, which is used by Coleridge; but the poets generally, since 1600, appear to have coaˈdjutor, after Latin. No Latin *coadjuvāre, or *coadjūtāre is recorded, but in the modern languages words have been formed on these types, suggested by coadjutor.
1. One who works with and helps another; a helper, assistant, fellow-helper.
