Etymology: < French coco de mer (1665 or earlier), literally ‘sea coco’ < coco coco n. + de de prep. + mer sea (see mere n.¹), probably after Portuguese coco-do-mar (1643 or earlier in an English context: see quot. 1643 at coco n. 3). Compare earlier coco n. 3, sea coconut n. 1.Hollow (germinated or rotted) seeds of this plant were found floating in the Indian Ocean and washed up on beaches in the Maldives long before the tree was eventually found (in the mid 18th cent.) growing in the Seychelles, and their strange appearance and unknown origin gave rise to some fabulous explanations (e.g. that they were the fruit of a submarine tree).
