单词 coco de mer
释义

coco de mern.

Brit. /ˌkəʊkəʊ də ˈmɛː/, U.S. /ˌkoʊkoʊ də ˈmɛr/
Inflections: Plural cocos de mer, coco de mers.
Forms: 1800s– coca de mer, 1800s– cocoa de mer, 1800s– coco de mer, 1900s– coc de mer. Also with hyphens.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French coco de mer.
Etymology: < French coco de mer (1665 or earlier), literally ‘sea coco’ < coco coco n. + de de prep. + mer sea (see mere n.1), probably after Portuguese coco-do-mar (1643 or earlier in an English context: see quot. 1643 at coco n. 3). Compare earlier coco n. 3, sea coconut n. 1.Hollow (germinated or rotted) seeds of this plant were found floating in the Indian Ocean and washed up on beaches in the Maldives long before the tree was eventually found (in the mid 18th cent.) growing in the Seychelles, and their strange appearance and unknown origin gave rise to some fabulous explanations (e.g. that they were the fruit of a submarine tree). Compare Portuguese †coquo das Maldivas (1563 in Garcia de Orta; also coco de Maldiva (1609 or earlier)) > post-classical Latin coccus de Maldiva (1563; also nux cocos de Maldiva (1690 or earlier)), French †cocos des Maldives (1615 in Pyrard de Laval's account of his voyage to the Maldives, where it is given as a name used by the Portuguese; now coco des Maldives (1713 or earlier)). In plural form cocos de mer after the French plural form. With the spelling variation, compare coco n. and discussion at that entry.
A large fan-palm, Lodoicea maldivica, of the Seychelles. Also: the fruit of this tree, or the very large two-lobed seed, encased in its hard shell. Also called double coconut n. at double adj.1 and adv. Compounds 1.The seed of the coco de mer can weigh over 20 kg, and is the largest and heaviest seed of any plant.
