Etymology: Probably < an arbitrarily (and humorously) extended form of cock n.1 + bird n. Compare -y suffix6, dicky bird n., and cock bird n.
colloquial. Now rare.
An affectionate term or pet name for: any small bird; cf. dicky bird n. Also: a decorative or ornamental representation of a small bird. N.E.D. (1891) includes a statement from a correspondent that ‘Cockyolly bird was familiar to me as a schoolboy in 1837’.
