Etymology: < ancient Greek μήτρα womb (see metro- comb. form3) + classical Latin -ium (see -y suffix4). Compare ancient Greek or Hellenistic Greek ἀμϕιμήτριος around the womb (first in a lemma in (Pseudo-)Galen Hippocratic Wds.).Combined with first elements of ultimately Greek origin. The first word in -metrium attested in English is mesometrium n.; others are endometrium n. at endo- prefix and comb. form , myometrium n., parametrium n.
