单词 | cockle-de-moy |
释义 | † cockle-de-moyn. Obsolete. Apparently used without fixed meaning in humorous contexts to denote a contemptible, unpleasant, or worthless person or thing; esp. something (sometimes explained as a counterfeit coin) of little or no value given in place of money (see e.g. quots. 1613, 1660).Some commentators have identified the cockle element with cockle n.2 and hence suggested meanings relating to shells, while others have identified it with cockal n. and suggested meanings relating to knucklebones.
