Etymology: < cockle (variant of cochle n.) + the plural of stair n., after Italian scale a chiocciola (1570 in Palladio in the source of quot. 1624; compare quot. 1715). In β. forms < cockle + stair n. Compare earlier cochlea n. 1a.
