† cocket-boatn.Origin: Apparently a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: cockboat n. Etymology: Apparently an alteration of cockboat n., after -et suffix1. Compare cockle boat n. (a) at cockle n.2 Compounds 3.Compare Middle French (northern) coquet, coket kind of small boat (c1307 in Old French; French regional (Normandy) coquet kind of river boat; < coque cock n.4 + -et -et suffix1), and the variant Old French (Paris) cochet kind of river boat (13th cent., reflecting a regular central French sound change). Compare ( < French) post-classical Latin cochetus kind of small river boat (13th cent. in a source from northern France) and Middle Dutch coket ship's boat (a1305). Middle French coquet is also reflected in some 17th cent. bilingual dictionaries, glossed as (and glossing) ‘cock boat’. Potential earlier parallel. Compare the following early examples from British sources (in a Latin context), which appear to show the first element on its own, and which may reflect an earlier borrowing into Middle English < either Middle French or Middle Dutch. However, it is unclear whether these should be interpreted as showing a Middle English word, an otherwise unattested Anglo-Norman equivalent of the Middle French word, or the Middle Dutch word:1344 in R.
