单词 cockernony
释义

cockernonyn.

Brit. /ˌkɒkəˈnɒni/, U.S. /ˌkɑkərˈnɑni/, Scottish English /ˌkɔkərˈnɔnɪ/, Irish English /ˌkɑkərˈnɑni/
Forms: 1700s–1800s cockernonie, 1700s–1800s cockernonny, 1700s– cockernony, 1800s cockernonnie, 1900s– Cockananny, 1900s– Cockanony, 1900s– Cockernanny.
Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; the first element may be related to cock v.1 (compare cock v.1 II. and cock n.8) or perhaps to cock n.2 (on account of its shape). Compare slightly earlier cock-up n.1 1.A relationship with cocker v.2 (and hence the apparently related cockle v.3, which is better attested before the 19th cent.) has also been suggested; however, there is no evidence that the original hairstyle was regarded as unsteady.
Scottish and Irish English (northern).
A hairstyle worn by (esp. young) women in which the hair is gathered up on top of the head with a snood (snood n. 1a); the high gathering of hair in this hairstyle, or a pad of hair worn when styling the hair in such a way in order to make it appear fuller. Also: a cap with a starched crown worn by women. Cf. cock-up n.1 1.In quot. 1991 a plaited queue in a man's hair.
