Etymology: In form a frequentative of clunt: see clunch n. It is thus to a certain extent a synonym of clutter n. and its variants; but it has also strong associations of use with clumper v.1 With the various senses compare Dutch klonteren to clot, coagulate, klontermelk, German dialect kluntermilch, curds; East Frisian kluntern to go clumsily and noisily.
