Origin: A borrowing from Spanish, combined with a proper name. Etymons: proper name Clinton, Spanish -ista.
Etymology: < the name of William J. D. (‘Bill’) Clinton (see Clintonian n.2 and adj.2) + Spanish -ista -ist suffix, probably after Peronista n., Zapatista n., etc.
U.S. Politics colloquial. Sometimes depreciative.
A supporter or adherent of Bill Clinton or his policies. Also: a member of the Clinton administration.
