Perhaps (i) a reduplication (with variation of the initial consonant) of English regional (northern) coddy small, little (1703 or earlier; of unknown origin), so called on account of the comparative smallness of the young bird. Or perhaps (ii) an arbitrary formation, with reference to the variegated plumage of the bird; compare mishmash n., mixty-maxty n., and for parallels in other Germanic languages perhaps compare Dutch hutje-mutje, hutje met mutje belongings, bits and pieces (1693 or earlier; also 1667 as hutje met tutje), German Kuddelmuddel confusion, mess, mishmash (1852; also (regional: Luxembourg) Kaudermauder), Danish skuddermudder confusion, turmoil, destruction (1772).In the γ. forms perhaps showing alteration after maw n.3 In 19th-cent. regional sources the word is also occasionally applied to the hooded crow and the curlew.
