单词 codbait
释义

codbaitn.1

Brit. /ˈkɒdbeɪt/, U.S. /ˈkɑdˌbeɪt/
Inflections: Plural unchanged, (occasionally) codbaits.
Forms:

α. 1600s 1800s– cadbait, 1700s cadbate.

β. 1600s codbate, 1600s–1800s codbait.

γ. 1700s cadbit.

δ. 1800s cadbote.

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: cod n.1, bait n.1
Etymology: < cod n.1 + bait n.1, after codworm n.1 (for the semantic motivation see codworm n.1 and cod n.1 6). Compare caddis-bait n. at caddis n.2 Compounds. The α. forms are probably after the β. forms at codworm n.1, or may independently show a phonetic variant of the β. forms at this entry (although those are first attested slightly later). Compare later cad n.3 The γ. and δ. forms are attested only in dictionaries. The former show an alteration after bit n.2, while the latter are perhaps originally the result of a transmission error.
Angling. Chiefly British. Now rare and chiefly historical.
The aquatic larva of a caddis fly, especially when used as fishing bait. Cf. cad n.3, codworm n.1 1.
