Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps an extended use of cockshoot n., perhaps with reference to woodcock being typically caught in a cockshoot at twilight. Perhaps < cock n.1 + shut v., twilight being regarded as the time when poultry go to rest and are shut up. Whichever of these is the origin of the word, both may have had some bearing on the range of forms attested.
