Origin: Apparently a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: coploft n.
Etymology: Apparently an alteration of coploft n., by folk-etymological association with cock n.1, as if originally a place in the rafters where cockerels roosted; compare hen-loft at hen n.1 Compounds 1b.The origin of the form cockleloft is unclear; it is attested only in the works of Anthony Wood (compare quot. 1646 at sense 1a).
