单词 cocklety
释义

cockletyadj.

Brit. /ˈkɒklti/, U.S. /ˈkɑk(ə)lti/
Forms: 1800s cockledy, 1800s– cockelty, 1800s– cocklety.
Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: cockly adj.2
Etymology: Probably an alteration of cockly adj.2 (although this is first attested later), perhaps after rickety adj. (compare -ety suffix); perhaps compare also hicklety-picklety , variant of higgledy-piggledy adv. Compare later coggledy adj., cockerty adj. Compare also earlier cockling adj.3Compare also English regional (northern) kicklety , kecklety , in the same sense (19th cent.). Earlier currency is probably implied by cockledy bread at cockelty bread n. β. forms.
Chiefly English regional (northern and midlands).
Unsteady, tottering; rickety, shaky, unstable. Cf. cockle v.3, cockly adj.2
