Etymology: < Gaelic clann family, stock, race, Old Irish cland, clann, apparently not originally a Celtic word, but < Latin planta sprout, shoot, scion, slip (compare stirps stock, stem, race). Goidelic substituted k for p, as caisg, corcur, Latin pascha, purpur.1595 A. Duncan Appendix Etymologiae: Index in Latinae Grammaticae Stirps, the stok of a tree or a clanne.
1. A number of persons claiming descent from a common ancestor, and associated together; a tribe.
