Etymology: < Afrikaans Afrikaans (noun) denoting a language of southern Africa which evolved from Dutch, (adjective) of, relating to, or designating this language or its speakers (South African Dutch Afrikaansch (early 19th cent.), use as noun of Dutch afrikaansch of, relating to, originating from, or belonging to Africa: see African n. and adj.). With the use as noun compare slightly later Afrikander n. 4. With the use as adjective compare earlier Afrikander adj. and Afrikaner adj.In α. forms after Afrikaans afrikaanse, attributive form of afrikaans , used e.g. in die afrikaanse taal the Afrikaans language. With the form Afrikaansche compare Dutch afrikaansche, attributive form of afrikaansch (adjective).

A language of southern Africa, and particularly of South Africa, a form of modified Dutch which evolved from the dialects of Dutch settlers in the region from the 17th cent. onwards. Cf.
