Etymology: < scientific Latin Africanthropus, former genus name, originally coined as a subgenus of Homo (F. Dreyer 1935, in Proc. Sect. Sci. Koninkl. Akad. Wetensch. Amsterdam 38 124; compare quot. 1935 at Florisbad n.) < classical Latin Āfrica , the name of Africa (see African n.) + scientific Latin -anthropus (see Pithecanthropus n.). Compare slightly earlier Florisbad n.

Palaeontology. Now historical.

Any of several extinct fossil hominids of the former genus or subgenus Africanthropus, known from Pleistocene fossil remains found in South and East Africa, and now regarded as various archaic forms of Homo sapiens. Also: the former genus or subgenus itself.
