Originally: a list of items of expenditure for the civil administration of the state, the support of the monarch and royal household, and other official pensions and salaries; the recipients of payments on this list (now chiefly historical). In later use: a fixed annual amount intended to meet certain items of state expenditure, esp. an allowance voted by Parliament to meet the official expenses of the British monarch.
