Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ἀεροβατεῖν.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἀεροβατεῖν to walk as if on the air < Hellenistic Greek ἀεροβάτης person who walks the air (although this is apparently first attested later) < ancient Greek ἀερο- aero- comb. form + -βάτης ( < the stem of βαίνειν to go (see basis n.) + -της, suffix forming agent nouns). N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (ē·ərobēit) /ˈeɪərəʊbeɪt/.

1922 T. Stenhouse Lives Enshrined in Lang. xl. 191 ‘I aerobate and circumspect the sun’, as one translator, or rather transliterator, gives Socrates answer, when he is represented suspended in a basket on the stage.
