Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: classification n., -ator suffix.
Etymology: < classific- (in classification n.) + -ator suffix. Compare French classificateur (1845; sense 2 is apparently not paralleled until later: 1961 or earlier), Italian classificatore (1685), both in sense ‘person who classifies objects, author of classifications’. Compare earlier classifier n. and (with sense 1) earlier classer n.
