Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian classico.
Etymology: < Italian classico (apparently 1933 or earlier designating a high-quality wine produced in a specific region: see quot. 1933), specific use of classico classic adj.The use to designate the region in which such wine is produced (compare quot. 1965) appears to be unparalleled in Italian.
Chiefly as postmodifier. In the classification of Italian wine (originally of Chianti): designating a wine produced in the district or town from which the type takes its name, and thus usually made to higher standards than a regional wine without the designation. Also: designating a region in which such a wine is produced.
