Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ἀήρ.

Etymology: < ancient Greek ἀήρ mist, haze, lower air, air in general, atmosphere, the open air (see air n.¹), in Byzantine Greek also the third large veil covering chalice and paten together. Compare French aër (1733 in the passage translated in quot. 1736).Perhaps so called from its symbolic association with the Holy Spirit.

A veil used to cover both the chalice and paten during the Liturgy.
