Etymology: < modern Latin cicatrizare, Italian cicatrizzare, < French cicatrise-r, -izer, in 16th cent. cicatricer, < Latin cicātrīcāre to scar over (a wound), < cicātrīc-em scar. (In French, Italian, modern Latin, and English, assimilated to verbs in -izāre , -iser , -ize suffix, as if short for cicatricize.)
1. transitive. To heal (a wound, sore, ulcer, etc.) by inducing a cicatrice or scar; to skin over.
