Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Chytridium.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Chytridium, genus name ( A. Braun Betrachtungen über die Erscheinung der Verjüngung in der Natur (1851) 198; earlier in Chytridium olla (1848)) < ancient Greek χυτρίδιον little pot < χυτρίδ- , χυτρίς ( < χύτρα or χύτρος earthen pot ( < χεῖν to pour (see yet v.) + -τρα or -τρος , suffix forming nouns) + -ίς -id suffix2) + -ιον , diminutive suffix; compare -idium comb. form; so called on account of the bulbous shape of the sporangium.Compare German Chytridien, plural (1851 in Braun). Compare also post-classical Latin chytridium little pot (1586 or earlier).

Any member of the class Chytridiomycetes or (more widely) the phylum Chytridiomycota, comprising microscopic aquatic fungi which reproduce by means of zoospores, and are saprobes found in water and soil and parasites of plants, algae, other fungi, and animals.Two species of chytrid fungi cause chytridiomycosis, an infectious disease thought to be responsible for declining amphibian numbers.
