Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French citronelle.
Etymology: < French †citronelle (now citronnelle ), denoting any of various plants whose herbs have a strong lemony smell (a1603 as †citronnele with reference to oranges in the New World; 1826 or earlier denoting a species of the fragrant South Asian grass Cymbopogon), liqueur flavoured with lemon peel (1740) < citron citron n. + -elle -elle suffix. Compare citronella n.
