Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin citreus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin citreus belonging to, or growing on the citron tree, made of the wood of the (African) citron tree ( < citrus citrus n. + -eus : see -eous suffix) + -ous suffix. Compare slightly earlier citrean adj. 2 and earlier citrine adj.
Citron- or lemon-coloured; (more loosely) yellow or yellowish. Cf. citrine adj.
