Draft additions December 2005

An uptempo style of music or dance originating in Indo-Caribbean communities in Guyana, Suriname, and Trinidad. Also (and in earliest use): a song of this style.Chutney songs were originally performed by women at wedding and childbirth celebrations with erotic lyrics accompanied by sexually suggestive dancing. They are performed in Bhojpuri, Hindi, and English, often combining these languages. Chutney instrumentation traditionally consists of the dholak, dhantal, and harmonium (see dholak n., dhantal n.). In modern use, chutney is sometimes used synonymously with chutney soca (chutney soca n.), which was originally a subgenre of chutney but has become the predominant popular style.
