Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin aeipathia; Greek ἀειπάθεια.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin aeipathia (1679 or earlier) or its etymon Hellenistic Greek ἀειπάθεια (Galen) < ancient Greek ἀεί ever, always ( < the same Indo-European base as ay adv.) + -παθεία -pathy comb. form.Compare the following earlier use of the Latin noun in an English context:1684 tr. S. Blankaart Physical Dict. 6 Aeipathia is a passion of long continuance. In β. forms directly < Hellenistic Greek ἀειπάθεια. N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (eˌəi·păþi) /eɪˈaɪpəθɪ/.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
A chronic or unremitting disease.
